Dr. Livia Canu

Graduated in 2019 from the Institut Franco-Européen de Chiropraxie in Paris

The CHIROPRACTIC is a primary healthcare profession that recognizes the body's inherent ability to achieve and maintain a state of proper balance.

The Doctor of Chiropractic identifies the causal factors of the disorder and eliminates the functional neurological interference (subluxation) optimizing the integrity of the spine and optimizing the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Chiropractic in the USA and Japan is the most widespread health profession among those that do not make use of drugs or medications.

Chiropractors don’t hold an M.D, so they aren’t medical doctors, but they graduate with a doctor of chiropractic degree.

They do have extensive training in chiropractic care and are licensed practitioners.

Currently this training is not present in Italy, which is why currently all the Chiropractic Doctors members of the Italian Chiropractic Association have a degree obtained abroad.

But be careful: in Italy there are many "operators" who say they are chiropractors with false foreign titles or with inappropriate training and below the aforementioned standards.

The Doctor of Chiropractic works primarily through the "chiropractic adjustments" which are generally rapid, high-velocity, low-amplitude pushes, applied with the hands to restore motion between the vertebrae without the need of invasive medicines or procedures.

The art of "adjusting" is a skill that requires years of study and practice, continuous training and updating.

It is essential to remember that the adjustments applied by the Doctor of Chiropractic have a precise protocol suitable for the different age groups: in the pediatric age we go from light touches to e delicate pressures with fingers on the newborn, up to more structural adjustments on adults.

When the movement between the vertebrae is restored correctly the psychophysical benefits you can enjoy are many.

Do not hesitate to contact the chiropractic centre to discover them all.

My interest in Chiropractic began when a 17 years my grandmother started suffering from a sciatic nerve pain that sees her bedridden by pain for a long time.

My grandmother had solved this problem thanks to Doctor Fronteddu, who worked in Nuoro

From that moment, Chiropractic became my passion, even before it became my profession.

Graduated from the Institute Franco-Européen de Chiropraxie in Paris, I started working in 2019 in Nuoro (at the San Giorgio Chiropractic Centre where I collaborate with Doctor Oliva).

In 2020 I opened my own office in Tortolì, near Baunei (where I'm originally from).

After 6 years of studies in Paris, including 2 years of internship in the school clinic, I put my knowledge at your disposal to give you relief from daily pains and prevent them from reappearing.

Currently I am continuing to study to obtain the specializations in Sports and Pediatric Chiropractic.

I entered the chiropractic centre with serious difficulty putting my foot down dragging it for months.
Doctor Canu welcomes me in a clean office, immediately putting me at ease.

She is: a nice, kind, very empathetic, and super professional Doctor.
Already from the first session I had the first benefits and then every time I got better and better.
She's my go-to chiropractor and I wouldn't trade her for the world.
Recommended to everyone and for all age groups, it gets you back on your feet and new 😉

Common questions asked about chiropractic care

Are chiropractic adjustments painful?

Chiropractic adjustment is a delicate and specific procedure, very different from a "manipulation".
It is applied only after careful analysis of the patient and inserted into a program aimed at a specific result.
Rarely causes discomfort as little force and light pressure is used.
In fact, most patients experience relief soon after the treatment.

Any pain reported after an adjustment was described as similar to that associated with starting a new sport.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest non-invasive, drug-free therapies for the treatment of anything that arises from nervous system dysfunction that has spinal involvement, such as back pain, neck pain, headache, herniated discs, joint pain, carpal tunnel, shoulder pain and tendinitis.
Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe when performed by a professional who has graduated after a long course of study.
At the moment only abroad, as unfortunately, given the regulatory gap in Italy, a legally recognized university course is not yet available.

What is the popping and cracking sound heard during a chiropractic adjustment?

That little pop is thought to be caused by a change in joint tension. When the chiropractor performs the adjustment, the joint space opens minutely allowing a release of pressure.

The cracking sound is nothing more than a result of the positive mechanical change which yields increased movement and improvement in overall function.

Either way, no worries. That little pop won’t hurt you.

Also, don’t be concerned if you don’t hear the popping sound when you receive a chiropractic adjustment. You will still get the therapeutic benefit of the chiropractic manipulation whether you hear anything or not. It’s the movement of the joint that is significant, not the pop.

Is chiropractic treatment the same for all patients?

Chiropractic treatment is unique and customized for each patient, to meet their specific conditions and needs.
The chiropractor will apply the treatment based on the patient's height, weight, age and health condition.

Once I start the treatment, will I have to continue it forever?

Generally it is the patients themselves who, once the corrective phase of the therapy is over, agree with the chiropractor on a maintenance treatment that provides for occasional adjustments in order to preserve the work done and to correct any new problems in the bud. A bit like the patient who, after having done some work on his teeth, still goes to the dentist to carry out routine. Patients are happy to have a treatment every now and then: in return they gain constant well-being and save money on other treatments and medicines!

Can athletes benefit from chiropractic care?

Chiropractic, by bringing the body back to a state of harmony and balance, can help sportive man and women, professionals and non-professionals, in two different areas: on the one hand it reduces the number of injuries and their consequences, on the other it contributes to improving performance .
For years, numerous leading Italian and international teams have included the figure of the chiropractor in their staff.

Is it possible to continue chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Not only chiropractic car is not contraindicated during pregnancy, but it can actually be a valid aid in fighting the possible onset of back pain, which is frequent above all from the fifth to sixth month onwards, without the use of any drugs.
According to some US statistics, chiropractic also allows for shorter labor and a faster and more contained expulsion phase from the point of view of pain.

Can chiropractic help children too?

From early childhood it is essential to check that the child grows correctly and, if necessary, promptly correct the various imbalances that are created with growth.
The techniques used on children are specific, very gentle, aimed at reducing stress and correcting any movement restrictions on the developing spine.

I suffer from osteoporosis, can I still undergo chiropractic treatment?

The doctor of chiropractic is able to treat people suffering from osteoporosis and is able to tailor their treatment and modify the intensity of their techniques to better suit the patient.
It is also the practice of the doctor of chiropractic to give lifestyle advice with the aim of improving the health of the spine and preventing further damage.

Is it possible to visit the chiropractor without having carried out any tests, x-rays for example?

Yes of course.
Any tests, if necessary, in agreement with the attending physician or specialist, may be requested later.

Can anyone who has had spinal surgery get chiropractic care?

Yes, with the due precautions of the case, which only a true chiropractic doctor would be able to take.
After a herniated disc or carpal tunnel surgery, it often happens that after a few years there are recurrences of the problems that existed before the operation: back or neck pain, sciatica or arm pain, tingling in the leg or arm or by hand.
Often it is still possible to intervene naturally with specific chiropractic treatment and avoid a second surgery.

How many treatments are needed to solve my problem?

The number of treatments required varies from case to case.
In general, the treatment of any physical problem involves three phases: a first intensive phase, where the chiropractor evaluates the person and tries to identify and correct the causes of his problem; an intermediate phase of stabilization and rehabilitation in which the results obtained are consolidated also through the prescription of specific exercises; a third maintenance phase which aims at long-term well-being and relapse prevention.
